Volunteering with the Maui Humane Society

Volunteer Application Process



Once you have looked over all of the opportunities for volunteering and are ready to apply, we ask our volunteers to fill out a volunteer application and an “interests and availability” form. These forms will get you started in the volunteer program and give us an idea of why you are interested in volunteering at MHS, as well as what areas you are most interested in helping. (Please make sure to mark ALL of the areas you are interested in helping with, otherwise you may not be contacted if a position opens up.)

** If you do not have an email address, we strongly urge you to open one, as email seems to be the best form of communication between the agency and our volunteers. Unfortunately, due to the active (and sometimes hectic) schedules of our staff, we cannot guarantee volunteers without email will be contacted for all opportunities by phone or mail. **

Shortly after we receive your application paperwork, we will do our best to schedule you for the next available general volunteer orientation. These orientations last approximately 1 ˝ hours and include a tour of our facility. These orientations are required in order to be allowed to volunteer at MHS.

Once you have completed the required volunteer orientation, we will work with you to find the best position to suit you, the agency and our schedules. Training is required for all volunteer positions at MHS and will be provided by the appropriate department.

If you prefer, you can request a Volunteer Packet be mailed or faxed to you by emailing Lnicolas@mauihumanesociety.org. Alternatively, please feel free to stop by the shelter any time to fill out paperwork to become a volunteer.

Volunteer Age Requirements

Children:

Ages 12 – 14 are allowed to volunteer, but MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This parent or guardian must also sign up as an official volunteer. Children ages 12 – 14 will not be allowed to work in the kennels with the dogs, but are allowed to do other projects associated with the dogs.

Ages 15+ are allowed to volunteer on their own (per MHS approval), but MUST have written consent of a parent or guardian.

Unfortunately at this time, children under the age of 12 are not allowed volunteer at MHS. There are, however, many opportunities for them to help our animals! Please click here for a list of ideas and projects.[not yet ready]

We also have Animal Camp for children in grades 3 – 6. This is a wonderful day camp held during school breaks that gives children an opportunity to learn more about animals, animal care, kindness and respect for animals, etc. Campers enjoy arts and crafts, guest speakers and hands-on activities to learn what a “Kind Kid” is all about.
