Program Descriptions

SHELTER HELPER: Our most popular area for volunteers, this involves directly working with our animals here in the shelter. This program is also considered like an "entry level position" for volunteers and therefore we recommend all volunteers spend their first couple of volunteer shifts in this program as it gives you a good feel for the shelter as a whole. Duties include, socializing, exercising and grooming animals; as well as general cleaning and upkeep of animal areas and items.

ADOPTION COUNSELOR ASSISTANT: This program provides you with the opportunity to help us find a new beginning for animals which have been given up by someone else, or have been lost and never claimed. Your duties will include counseling people in their choice of a new pet, and provide them with the knowledge of care and training in order to make each pet a lifelong companion.

MOBILE ADOPTIONS: This program provides the public with an opportunity to visit a "mini" Humane Society at different locations in our community. In addition to being another resource for adoptions, we are able to reach people who are unfamiliar with our programs, people who have pet related questions and people who just want to talk story.

PET THERAPY: This program involves taking small animals to visit the elderly and physically or emotionally handicapped people and is proof that the bond between humans and animals is beneficial for physical and mental health. We provide these folks a time where they have something to love, something to hold, and something that gives back love in an unconditional way.

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: The education department has many areas that you can participate in. We strive to educate the public on all areas of responsible pet ownership, overpopulation issues and all other aspects of humane education. We are also in need of people to assist in the development and maintenance of all our educational programs and events. People interested in this area are encouraged to join our education committee which meets monthly to discuss any and all educational issues.

SPECIAL EVENTS: We have a variety of special events and fund raisers which are usually staffed entirely by volunteers. Help in this area is varied depending on the event but involves everything from the organization beforehand to the clean up afterwards.

VETERINARY ASSISTANT: This is an opportunity to support our veterinary staff to provide medical care and assistance to the animals in our care. Also involves maintaining cleanliness and disinfecting standards necessary for disease control.

OFFICE AND CLERICAL HELP: We are always in need of assistance from people who have skills and /or an interest in this area. Again, duties are varied and can include (but is not limited to) public relations, phone help, filing, computer input and mail outs.

SHELTER DOG TRAINING PROGRAM: Provides the opportunity to develop a special relationship with many of our abandoned and forgotten animals. With some basic "manners" that so many of them are in need of, and some time and patience, their chances at starting a new beginning are enhanced.

"WEE CARE" FOSTER PROGRAM: This program allows animals who otherwise may not have a chance for adoption to get a second chance. This program includes fostering young animals until they are old enough to get adopted and sick or injured animals until they are well enough to find a new home. (Please link this to the Wee Care page) If you don't have this page created or information for it, let me know. This page needs the program information and an online sign up page.

MISCELLANEOUS: There are many other skills and interests that you can bring to our shelter that are not listed here. Things like yard work and construction are always needed for the upkeep, maintenance and ongoing expansion of our facility. Art work and graphics are always being used for promotions, education and advertising. The sky's the limit on this one, perhaps you can think of things you can do to help we haven't even thought of yet!

The Maui Humane Society will provide all necessary training and materials needed to help you feel comfortable in any area in which you are volunteering.

For more information, or to sign up for an orientation, please contact Kelly Sampels at 877-3680 x37.

Thank you for being a part of the Maui Humane Society and helping the homeless animals of Maui find happy loving homes to have that life they deserve. We thank you, and we couldn't do what we do without you. Remember, together we can make a difference!
