Volunteer Spotlight
Deborah Goldsmith
In November of 2009, after many weekend visits with our cuddly cats, Deborah Goldsmith decided to become an “official”
volunteer at MHS. The lives of our cats, staff, and visitors have never been the same. Deborah knew from the get-go
that she wanted to work in the cat building to help all of MHS’s kitties find their loving, forever homes, but didn’t
realize the impact she would have on those around her.
Deborah loves cats and appreciates their independence, quiet self-confidence, and lovable nature. As Deborah got to
know the cats and they her on her personal visits, she started taking photographs of them. Deborah has a way of
capturing the essence and individuality of each cat or kitten she photographs. These photos were then used to make
personal profile cards for each cat ~ something new in the cat building.
As an assistant with our valued animal care staff, Deborah socializes with the cats, continues to take their photos,
and greets the public, telling them about our lovely felines and helping visitors to find just the right cat for their
family. She has helped countless animals get adopted and remembers every one, each holding a special place in her
heart. Deborah is scheduled to help out at the shelter only two days per week, but you can find her there no less
than six, always coming to lend a hand when she’s got some extra time! She is so committed to her “job” at MHS, she
even spent her husband’s birthday there when needed.
Deborah has such drive and innovation. She has helped with many other projects, including special events, beautifying
the cat building, featuring our pets on the MHS Facebook page, and giving invaluable feedback on many promotional
ideas. At the end of each day we thank her for coming and she replies with “Thank you for letting me be here.”
Deborah exudes such enthusiasm for the work she does, compassion for the individuals she works with ~ human and
feline alike ~ and has inspired many people: to get involved and support the Maui Humane Society, to find passion
in life, and to be the best you can be.
Mahalo nui loa, Deborah, from the animals and staff. We applaud you and all that you do!
