Pet Care: Kittens and Cats
KITTENS
Many kittens acquire parasites from their mother so an early check for parasites helps maintain a healthy kitten. Wormings are often started as early as 3-4 weeks of age. Kittens are prone to many diseases, particularly Upper Respiratory Infections. It is vital that vaccinations are given following your veterinarian's recommendations.-These are usually started at 6-8 weeks of age.
Kitten's veterinary check usually include:
- Immunizations
- Parasite check and/or worming
- Discuss heartworm preventative
- Discuss Felv/Fiv testing
- Discuss when to schedule spay/neuter.
- Discuss diet and any breed or behavior related questions.
CATS
Because pets age so rapidly, major health changes can occur in a short amount of time. The risk of cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, thyroid problems and other serious conditions all increase with age. Twice a year wellness exams can help your veterinarian diagnose, treat or even prevent problems before they become life threatening. They are also a great opportunity to ask your veterinarian about nutrition, behavior and other issues.
Adult cat health screenings may include:
- Immunizations
- Parasite check
- Heartworm check
- Dental health
- Blood panel
- Chemistry panel
- Urinalysis
