Humane Education
Young Brothers/Hawaiian Tug and Barge generously donated a $2,000 grant to help educate Maui's school age children through our SPEAK! Program (Shelter Pets Education and Kids).
These funds enable the Maui Humane Society to provide the children with materials such as “What is Animal Cruelty?” coloring books, “Pets Are For Life” pins, Humane Education Award Certificates. These humane educational tools are intended to provide a lasting memory of the Humane Education experience.
Humane education teaches children of all ages to recognize and accept the responsibility of companion animals and to help encourage kindness and empathy for all animals. Humane education also stimulates positive interactions with animals, people, and their environment. Humane education is a very effective tool to ensure the humane treatment, end abuse and neglect of animals.
Through our various humane education programs at the Maui Humane Society, our goal is to create an awareness of the many issues faced by animals, including the pet overpopulation, cruelty , neglect, and offer solutions. We hope to encourage the students’ sense of compassion, justice, and respect for the value of all living creatures.
The Maui Humane Society offers a wide range topics based upon the age of the group. We can design the presentation to meet the needs and interests of the group. The group can come to the shelter for a fun and interactive presentation, or we can come to your school or event. Presentation time ranges from 20 to 60 minutes.
Here is a brief description of the presentation topics:
- Animal Behavior: Understanding the “Language” of animals. (All age groups.)
- Animal Cruelty: How do we identify and prevent animal cruelty. (All age groups.)
- Community Service: What you can do to help the shelter animals, (Ages 10 and up.)
- Euthanasia: The history and definition of euthanasia. (Ages 13 and up.)
- Fostering Empathy: Relating human experiences to animals needs. (All age groups.)
- Human-Animal Bond: The mind and body benefits to pet ownership. (Ages 8 and up.)

“Children trained to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in the relations with others. Character training along these lines in youth will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding.
In every respect more valuable citizens.” National PTA Congress 1933
