Pet Identification
The County of Maui requires that all dogs over the age of 4 months have a license; there are no licensing
regulations for cats. Pet owners are encouraged to have all pets identified in some manner; ID tags are
available for cats at the Maui Humane Society.
Permanent identification in the form of a microchip or tattoo is also highly recommended and are available
through veterinary offices. A tattoo though highly visible is best to be done when your pet is undergoing
another surgical procedure such as spay/neuter due to the need of the animal to be under anesthesia. Microchips
are implanted just under the skin between the shoulder blades in a procedure similar to a vaccine injection. An
identification number is detected when a scanner is passed over the animals back. Permanent identification is
especially beneficial for cats that will not tolerate wearing a collar.
Remember that identification is only as good as the information recorded in our data bases. Make sure to update
the Maui Humane Society or your veterinarian when you have moved or changed your phone numbers.
